Bio

Domenico Barretta is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Industrial and Information Engineering at the II University of Naples / University of Campania L. Vanvitelli, where his research focuses on satellite onboard intelligence. He previously earned both his B.Sc. and M.Sc. cum laude in Aerospace Engineering from the same university, and completed a postgraduate degree in Space Policies, jointly organized by the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI – UNA Italy) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI).

His professional experience spans research fellowships and industrial collaborations in the areas of distributed space mission design, maritime domain awareness, and artificial intelligence for spaceborne remote sensing applications. He is recipient of the IEEE Systems Council James O. Gray Award, the ASI / CAIF Scholarship, and the Telespazio T-TeC 2024 Award (prototype category) for the project P3ANDA.

He has also held positions at international research institutions, including NATO STO – CMRE, ESA/ESRIN (Φ-lab Division), and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory / Caltech.

Current Role

Currently, he is working at NASA JPL / Caltech, Pasadena, CA, USA, in the Artificial Intelligence Group (397).

He specializes in onboard AI applications and distributed space mission design.
