Bio
Saioa Munuera Irurzun is a PhD student in Conservation and Sustainable Use of Forest Systems at the University of Valladolid, Spain. Her research focuses on understanding forest dynamics by integrating Earth Observation and field data with remote sensing and artificial intelligence. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Geography and Spatial Planning from the University of the Basque Country (EHU), Spain, and a Master's degree in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing from the Public University of Navarre (UPNA), Spain. Before starting her PhD, she worked as a GIS specialist and researcher on environmental monitoring and Earth Observation projects. As a visiting researcher at ESA Φ-lab, she aims to learn how to apply Geospatial Foundation Models with multi-frequency SAR data for forest structure characterization.
Current Role
Currently, I am a PhD student in Conservation and Sustainable Use of Forest Systems at the University of Valladolid, where I investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of forest ecosystems by integrating Earth Observation and field data, including dendrochronology. My research develops remote sensing and artificial intelligence approaches to characterize forest dynamics and resilience under global change.
Areas of Expertise
My expertise lies in remote sensing and geospatial analysis, with a particular focus on integrating optical, radar, LiDAR, and field data to study forest dynamics and resilience. These skills enable me to develop AI-based methodologies for forest characterization and monitoring, contributing to ESA Φ-lab's research on Geospatial Foundation Models and multi-frequency SAR applications.
Vision for the Future
Saioa aims to improve methodologies that enhance our understanding of forest dynamics, support sustainable forest management, and inform decision-making under global change.
