Bio
Quentin Paletta is a Research Fellow and Technical Officer at the Φ-lab of the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) in Italy, in collaboration with the Climate Office of the European Space Agency (ESA) in the UK. His work focuses on leveraging Earth observation and machine learning to address challenges in climate and energy, bridging the gap between space technology and sustainable energy solutions. Since June 2025, Quentin has been on secondment at the International Energy Agency (IEA), where he explores the transformative potential of Earth observation for the global energy sector. Before joining ESA, Quentin completed a master's in Energy Technologies and a PhD in deep learning for solar forecasting at the University of Cambridge. His research has contributed to improving the accuracy and reliability of solar energy forecasting based on ground-level sky cameras and weather satellites, supporting the integration of renewable energy into power grids.

Areas of Expertise

My expertise lies in several key areas of remote sensing and AI-driven environmental monitoring, including high-resolution satellite and ground-based imagery (Sentinel 2, sky cameras), deep learning (DL), and computer vision. These specializations enable me to develop advanced systems for precise cloud-cover detection and analysis, which can significantly benefit ESA Φ-lab CIN by supporting the energy transition (Project ongoing) and directly advancing the CIN project’s focus on renewable energy efficiency and reliability.
Vision for the Future
Guided by a vision of a carbon-neutral world with resilient biodiversity and reduced inequalities, I am dedicated to accelerating the transition to low-carbon energy by advancing solar forecasting and enabling mitigation solutions such as battery storage and demand-side response.
