Bio
Luca Marini (L.Marini@tudelft.nl) received his B.Sc. in computer science and engineering from the University of Bologna and his M.Sc. degree in machine learning from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. He collaborated with the European Space Agency (ESA) during his master’s thesis to detect marine anomalies using deep semi-supervised learning methods on Sentinel-2 images. His professional experience includes working as an AI researcher at Frontier Development Labs – Earth Systems Lab and at KTH, contributing to the Divisions of Geoinformatics and RPL (Robotics, Perception, and Learning).
Current Role
He is currently a Ph.D. researcher in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. His research focuses on developing computer vision and deep learning techniques for the onboard processing of Earth observation images. He is particularly interested in the early detection and geolocation of environmental disasters using optical satellite imagery and AI-learned embeddings.
Areas of Expertise
His expertise lies in Deep Learning and Computer Vision, with a particular focus on geolocation and georeferencing of satellite imagery. Through his academic and professional journey, he has developed deep expertise in semi-supervised learning, semantic segmentation, and image georeferencing. These capabilities enable him to drive innovation in the onboard geo-location of PhiSat-2 satellite images.
Vision for the Future
Driven by a vision of a future free from the constant fear of environmental disasters and other hazards that threaten human health and biodiversity, he is dedicated to developing and deploying advanced AI and computer vision algorithms onboard spacecraft. His goal is to enable the rapid detection and effective mitigation of these crises.
