Institution description
The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) is Germany’s national research center for aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security, and digitalisation. With approximately 11,000 employees across more than 30 institutes and facilities in Germany, DLR conducts fundamental and applied research, develops innovative technologies, and operates major research infrastructures. The Remote Sensing Technology Institute (IMF), based at the DLR site in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, specializses in developing algorithms and processing systems for extracting geophysical parameters from remote sensing data acquired by spaceborne, airborne, and ground-based sensors. IMF’s research areas include SAR signal processing, optical remote sensing, hyperspectral image analysis, atmospheric retrieval, and applied AI/machine learning for Earth observation. The institute plays a central role in the scientific exploitation of data from European satellite missions such as Sentinel, EnMAP, and TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X. Within the FAST-EO project, DLR’s Remote Sensing Technology Institute serves as the consortium lead, coordinating the partnership and contributing expertise in representation learning, visual foundation models, and scalable EO data analysis.
Technical Officer Bio
Rıdvan Salih Kuzu is a Senior Researcher at the Remote Sensing Technology Institute of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and an AI Consultant at the Helmholtz AI Cooperation Unit. He received his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010) and M.Sc. in System and Control Engineering (2017) from Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, and his Ph.D. in Applied Electronics from Roma Tre University, Rome (2021). His doctoral thesis was honored with the 15th European Biometrics Research Award (2021). He has also received the Best Demo Award at the 9th GTTI Thematic Meeting on Multimedia Signal Processing (2019), the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (2022), and the Hyperview Challenge Award at IEEE ICIP (2022). Since 2010, he has held various positions at private companies and public research institutions, including roles as an R&D engineer, consultant, manager, and Marie-Curie research fellow. His current research focuses on representation learning, hyperspectral image processing, self-supervised and few-shot learning, explainable AI, and visual foundation models for Earth observation.
