Bio
I am Casper Fibaek, a professional in the field of Earth Observation with a solid foundation in Artificial Intelligence applications. My professional journey began with my industrial doctoral studies with the engineering consultancy NIRAS leading to my PhD, focusing on innovative applications of AI for satellite imagery analysis. With my expertise in developing AI-driven solutions for Earth Observation data, I have contributed to the European Space Agency for several impactful years, most recently as an Earth Observation Application Specialist. During my tenure at ESA's Φ-lab as an Internal Research Fellow, I managed significant initiatives including ESA's contribution to the UNICEF-GIGA project aimed at mapping and connecting schools globally.
Current Role
I manage the ESA CopPhil and SCOPE projects in Southeast Asia, leveraging Copernicus data and integrating its use into mandated national agencies. My work combines technical expertise with international cooperation, particularly focused on enhancing disaster risk management and climate change adaptation capabilities in Asia.
Areas of Expertise
My expertise lies in several key areas of Earth Observation and Artificial Intelligence, including AI applications for satellite imagery analysis, foundation models for geospatial data, and science diplomacy. These specialisations enable me to develop innovative solutions that transform raw satellite data into actionable intelligence for disaster risk management and sustainable development initiatives, which can significantly benefit ESA Φ-lab CIN by advancing cutting-edge research that bridges the gap between technological innovation and real-world applications. My technical proficiency includes developing specialised software frameworks for Earth Observation data processing (such as Buteo and Sen2Sharp), creating evaluation benchmarks for geospatial foundation models, and implementing human-in-the-loop approaches that enhance user engagement with complex AI systems. This combination of technical and applied expertise directly supports ESA's mission to foster innovative applications of space technologies that address global challenges.
Vision for the Future
I hope for a future where Earth Observation data and artificial intelligence work in concert to support inclusive sustainable development, I am committed to bridging technological innovation with practical solutions for our most pressing global challenges. My work aims to democratise access to space-derived insights, ensuring communities worldwide—particularly those most vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters—can benefit from the wealth of information satellites provide.
