Bio
I am Çağatay Çakan, a PhD student at Aalborg University in Denmark, working in hydrology, Earth observation, remote sensing, and geoscience data analytics. I hold an academic background in water resources engineering, hydrology, and extreme hydrological events, with a particular focus on satellite-based assessment of terrestrial water resources. My research primarily investigates the use of GRACE/-FO satellite missions and complementary Earth observation datasets to improve the understanding of water storage dynamics under climate variability and human influence with data assimilation.
Current Role
I am currently a PhD student at Aalborg University, where I develop methodologies to investigate terrestrial water storages and hydrological fluxes using Earth observations, hydrological models, and data assimilation techniques. My work combines satellite gravimetry, hydrological data, and advanced analytical methods to better understand water availability and extreme hydrological events at regional scales.
Areas of Expertise
My expertise lies in several key areas of large-scale hydrology, including Earth observation datasets and the development of methodologies for investigating water resources and climate-related impacts. Through my collaboration in the ESA Φ-lab CIN, I aim to contribute to innovative approaches that integrate satellite observations, data assimilation, and machine learning to improve Earth system monitoring and decision support.
Vision for the Future
My research vision is to develop hybrid modeling frameworks that integrate physical process understanding with data-driven approaches to improve our understanding of the terrestrial water cycle and the dynamics of extreme hydrological events. By combining Earth observation data, hydrological modeling, and advanced analytics, I aim to enhance the management of water resources under a changing climate.
