On June 10 at 14:00 CEST, the ESA Φ-Lab Collaborative Innovation Network will host a new Φ-talk. Details are below.
Meet the speaker
Konrad Schindler received his PhD from the Graz University of Technology (Austria) in 2003. He was a photogrammetric engineer in the private industry and held post-doctoral researcher positions at Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) and ETH Zurich (Switzerland). In 2009, he became Assistant Professor of Image Understanding at TU Darmstadt (Germany), since 2010, he has been a tenured professor of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing at ETH Zurich. His research interests lie in the field of visual AI, with a focus on remote sensing and 3D computer vision.
Talk abstract
This talk describes recent progress in the development of 3D point cloud foundation models, with a particular emphasis on applications in forest mapping for both ecological and commercial purposes. Konrad Schindler will first discuss efficient neural architectures for processing unstructured 3D point clouds, then show how to embed those architectures in a self-supervised distillation scheme to enable large-scale training of foundational feature extractors for point clouds.
