On 18 March at 14:00 CEST, the ESA Φ-Lab Collaborative Innovation Network will host a new Φ-talk. Details are below.
Meet the speaker
Emanuele Dalsasso received his PhD from Telecom Paris in 2022 and his M.Sc. and a B.S. from the University of Trento. He is currently a Research Scientist at Inria Grenoble. His research interests include Deep Learning and SAR. He is the recipient of IGARSS Symposium Prize Paper Award 2021 and EUSAR Student Paper Award 2022 (2nd place). Since September 2025, he has been co-Lead of the WG-ISP of the IEEE GRSS IADF TC.
Talk abstract
SAR image interpretation is limited by strong signal fluctuations caused by the speckle phenomenon, an intrinsic property of coherent imaging systems. In this talk, Emanuele Dalsasso discusses the challenges related to SAR despeckling and presents MERLIN, a self-supervised training framework that learns to suppress speckle from SAR images using only speckle-corrupted observations. Finally, the speaker shows how despeckling can enable the learning of meaningful SAR image representations that are transferable to semantic segmentation and regression tasks.
